Harry Query.-please help!
My copy of Harry is still en route so I am staying away from all sites that may let something slip. My sister has just rung in a panic becaise she brought my brother that children's version and someone has told her that it isn't just a different cover, the adult's version has another 150 pages of lurid detail.
Now I don't know any child over 5yo who would put up with this, so i think it is rubbish, someone please confirm so I can end her worry, ta Tracey
can't confirm or deny as i read the child's version this weekend - I haven't heard anything to this effect on any news website this weekend and I'm sure it would have been on the BBC website which I've been checking hourly to keep abreast of the flood situation in our old home town of Gloucester - wouldn't have thought JKR would have done this though
ReplyDeletebtw I won't let out any secrets of the plot at all - suffice to say the book is very fast moving and I had to keep re-reading the odd page here and there just to be sure of what I'd read and to keep abreast of the story - you'll love it - I think it's the best of the books, started it at 6pm on Saturday and finally put it down finished at 1.15am Sunday morning - Brilliant!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of an adult and a child's copy. I have the US copy. Good book!
ReplyDeleteI will double check in a little while because my son bought the children's cover and his girlfriend bought the adult cover. Dymocks lists it only as a cover difference. Perhaps the problem has risen because there seems to be a page numbering difference. I saw a childish argument on the net a few days ago about how many pages the book had. I think here in Australia ours is just over 600 pages and the US version seems to have around 750.( or at least that was what the argument was about) When I looked at amazon to confirm that I couldn't find it but it is a different publisher which might account for that. Maybe that is where the problem that you have has arisen. I will let you know when son gets out of bed ( what is it with University students? )
ReplyDeleteSome confirmation from Wikipedia - but do no go here if you haven't read the book because the plot line is there (it's okay I finished the book on Sunday)
ReplyDeleteThe British version has 607 pages and the US version has 759 pages, so it sounds to me like that is the cause of the 150 pages difference. I would imagine that if there were 'naughty bits' we would have heard about it and the book would be in demand. Still waiting for son to wake up.....
Can't wait for you to get the book and tell us what you think!! I loved it!! I won't give anything away other then to say it was really good!!!

Update - son has emerged from his bedroom and states that he and his girlfriend read exactly the same story. The only difference is the cover - so now your sister can be at ease.
ReplyDeleteUS distribution has not child's vs. adult's version. That's strictly a UK (and former UK territories after 1776) convention. I doubt very much that they would do that. I can't say for sure, but I have heard NOTHING about this. And the US version is lurid enough, thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe book is fabulous, well worth the wait, and I'd never call it lurid - I who am definitely an easily scandalized Puritan in my reading. =)
