Hi to all the girls who may have retreated to the computer for a break from the Bathurst 1000 Supercar race this afternoon.
This album birthday quilt needs to be handed over to it's 70th birthday recipient this Friday and is so far still just blocks. I have about 25 blocks, with nearly a dozen due in by tomorrow...hopefully.I mailed the calico squares all around Australia and this is the result,-you know the late ones are the family who live around here..and me! I love this lady, she was until recently one of my closest neighbors and has been like a second mum...has the dubious honour of teaching me how to gut and pluck poultry...there's a second career just out there waiting somewhere!
Back to the point, after I tidy all these squares to the same size I need to at least start cutting, my plan is just quite simple sashing so it is the blocks that are the highlight. These two choices are about a 2 inch sash and a three inch sash. Which do you think?

ReplyDeletenot sure how big the blocks are, but I am thinking they must be 8 or 10"?? 2" would be perfect if they are bigger than 8" otherwise it would be ONE HUMUNGOUS quilt, and beleive me, I know how big humungous quilts are! stupid here was mathemagically challenged and stuffed up and was on the way to making a 140" square quilt.. yes 1.4.0. how blonde am I???

I like the 3" ... it then allows the eye to see each individual block in harmony - rather than you eye (& mind) getting scrambled by all the images. Good luck - will be a most beautiful gift. Hugs Jx

ReplyDeleteI like the look of the 2" sash - but I have no logical reason; it just looks nice! She's a very lucky lady to have a friend like you. You are putting a lot of effort into organising all the block-making and then assembley.

ReplyDeleteThe blocks look big so they could handle a 3" sashing but I prefer the narrower. The blocks are very pretty.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could pick the size based on the finished size of the blocks. I'm no expert *s* but I read somewhere that the sash (border) should relate to the block in size. If the blocks are 9" then 3" would be nice (easy division) if they are 10" then go for the 2".
ReplyDeleteIn the end, the quilt will be dearly loved and so all that mental calculation won't be necessary at all *s*
I vote for the 2 inch borders as it doesn't overpower the blocks...
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the 2" sash, but it would depend on how big you want the quilt to be. If you really can't decide, you can go with 2.5. :)
ReplyDeleteGo with the 3" or 2.5 finished. Makes for a nice space between the blocks. This is a very nice gift for a special friend. I like it.

ReplyDeleteUp here in the UK, I got the whole bed to myself cause he stayed up to watch the V8s.
... there is something wrong with me ... I always tend to be" odd man/woman out." I would add a narrow border of coral/yellow/peach to the outside of each block, then use the brown between, slightly larger then the coral/yellot/peach. I see (up close) the brown has some definition of it's own, but IMHO, too much brown for the loveliness of the blocks. I am thinking the coral/yellow/peach would brighten them up, adding to the happiness of the blocks. (Now, I KNOW, no matter what you do, it WILL be wonderful!)

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea for a memorable quilt.
I like the 3" sashing. I think it frames the block nicely and allows the block to stand out better and rests the eye between each block. Have you heard of the 'Fibonacci' rule? There is a great article and table in I think it was Down Under Quilts by Barb Cleaver. Very interesting. Handy for setting out quilts in proportion etc.
