Hi, some testimonials for Rotary Cutters please...

My cutter is driving me crazy even after changing the blade, this is the second one I'm retiring. Can you please tell me the best one you've dealt with, I'm at my quilt shop in the morning. Here's a photo of a cushion I made as bait for telling me about your cutter. ta, Tracey

  1. I like the ones that close automatically. Also get an "ergonomic" one. The older ones that look like pizza cutters can do a number on the nerves in your hand - they always press onto a small spot.
    Avoid this style:

This is the kind I like:

it fits better in your hand and closes automatically.

    As for size....
I have the tiny one for when I want to trim/fussy cut around acrylic templates, the regular size for general cutting, and the JUMBO for cutting through batting when I am trying to make batting squares for quilt as you go projects. I know people who use this one as their all the time cutter.

  2. I like the giant Olfa cutter and use if for most all of my cutting needs. I do have a medium sized one around here somewhere -- but that tells you something.
I do have the 'pizza cutter' type that is not self closing. It can cause soreness, but I find if I keep my blade fresh and new, this is not a problem and I made sure that I developed the habit of making sure it is closed after each and every cut.

  3. Tracey, I also love the pizza cutter style. I personally don't do well with the ergonomic self closing ones - I find holding it open makes my arm sorer! (ok sorer - probably not a real word but it fits!)

I also use Olfa only. However I use the medium size one for everything (45mm). Are you starting to get the drift here - everyone is going to have a different opinion! As with anything I think it just depends on what works for you!

  4. I love my Olfa cutter. It's the medium size and has the curved handle. you just push a button to make it lock open and then push it again to close. LOVE it.

  5. I use a large Olfa "pizza cutter" type myself. I do have the medium one that's supposed to be ergonomic, but I'm not overly fond of it - it doesn't angle right for me.

Also my large cutter hasn't caused my hand any problems, usually it's my other hand that poops out first, from holding the ruler in place.

  6. Thanks for the comment! I love my older Olfa pizza cutter style. I have a regular and a jumbo and both have always been great. I've had both for many, many years.

I look forward to seeing your Quilt for an Hour fabrics...

  7. Plain old 45mm Olfa for me. I'm not too keen on cutting, so I don't have big cutting binges anyway.

  8. I use the old "pizza cutter" style Olfa in the 60mm size. I find it much easier to cut with the 60mm.
